A five-day immersive short course in screenwriting, creative imagination, and channeling Paris as a muse, led by Oscar-nominated Before Sunrise trilogy screenwriter Kim Krizan. Students will participate in writing-craft classes, free-writing exercises, one-on-one consultations, “table reads” of their writing, and interactive journaling exercises around the city of Paris — the setting of Krizan’s iconic 2004 movie, Before Sunset.

Kim Krizan is the co-writer of the Before Sunrise film series. She was nominated for an Academy Award and a Writers Guild Award for her work on Before Sunset, which was set in Paris. Krizan also wrote Spy in the House of Anaïs Nin, an examination of the diarist’s long-buried letters and papers. Recently, Krizan’s work was seen in Chanel’s 2024/2025 Ready-to-Wear cinematic story starring Brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz, which was based on the classic French romance A Man and a Woman. Krizan lives in Los Angeles where she teaches screenwriting and creative writing. Follow her on Instagram @kimkrizan.
Rolf Potts’ travel essays and reportage have appeared in such venues as The New Yorker, The Atlantic, National Geographic Traveler, Sports Illustrated, the Travel Channel, and National Public Radio, as well as over 20 nonfiction anthologies, including the Best American Travel Writing series and the Best Creative Nonfiction series. Potts has taught nonfiction writing at Penn and Yale University. Potts has authored five nonfiction books, including the travel-bestseller Vagabonding (Random House, 2003). His newest book is The Vagabond’s Way (Ballantine, 2022).
Award-winning writer and De Anza College professor Julie Pesano will provide program assistance and interactive writing activities in various Paris settings, including Before Sunset filming locations.
